2003 Tax Tables
Following is a link to the 2003 Tax Tables for form
1040 filers.
In order to view the 2003 tax tables, you will need to
have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your
computer. This program is free to download and is
available in several places on this site. If you
already have Adobe installed, see the "2003 Tax Tables"
link at the bottom of this page.
The tables are easy to use. You do need to know your tax
filing status: Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately
or Head of Household. Once you know your taxable
income from Line 40 of your tax return, find that amount in the table
under your filing status column.
The most common mistake people make is to find the taxable amount but
use the tax amount from the wrong filing status column, ie.
their filing status is Married Filing Jointly, but they use
the tax amount from the Single column.
For example, let's say your taxable income (from line
40 on your tax return) is $58,975. You would find the $58,000
heading in the table and try to find the amount in the first
column of the table. You would see the range $58,950 to $59,000.
If your filing status is Single, you would find your tax in the
second column from the left: $11,554. However, if your filing
status is Married Filing Jointly, you would find your tax in the
third column from the right: $8,364. That is
quite a difference, so it is important to spot the
right column for your filing status!
Also, it might be a good idea to do a quick
review of the example that the IRS provides
on the top of the first page of the 2003
Tax Tables.
Note: Only use these 2003 tax tables if your taxable income
for that year was less than $100,000. If your taxable income was more
than $100,000 you must use the tax rate schedules on the last
page (p.13) of the 2003 tax tables document.
